The Beaux’ Stratagem at the National

Just finished writing the score for Simon Godwin’s production of Restoration comedy The Beaux’ Stratagem at the National Theatre. The music is folksy, bluegrass inspired and played live on stage in the Olivier. Here’s a trailer:

Michael Bruce is a Scottish filmmaker, composer and lyricist who works in TV, film and theatre. He has composed scores and original songs for Warner Bros, Netflix, PBS, Sky Arts, the National Theatre, the Old Vic and theatres in the West End and on Broadway. He was composer-in-residence at the Donmar Warehouse from 2012-2019, and is also a music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator for Disney Live Entertainment.

His debut short film as writer/director is the musical, Kiloran Bay, starring Alan Cumming and Jack Wolfe. It had its world premiere at the BFI Flare Festival in London on March 25th, 2026.

His stage musical, based on the film The Illusionist, opened in Tokyo in 2021 and his debut musical theatre album Unwritten Songs topped the iTunes vocal chart.
